She get it from her Momma!
She gets a lot of things from her Momma. One of my mom’s creative gifts that I was blessed with is my love for home decorating.
I remember how she used to hunt down tiles, fabric, and wallpaper swatches. There were furniture source books and magazines with paper napkins as bookmarks. Whether she had a budget or a dream, one thing Penny was going to do was seek out inspiration + resources for her decoration projects.
I’m grateful that I am to channel her bold decorating spirit. Maybe I’m not even a good decorator but I feel like I am because I have the confidence + creativity to make our home as beautiful as I possibly can.
I find joy decorating bit by bit, with a bit of trial and error, and with a lot of help from my therapist, HomeGoods.
Maybe you feel like decorating is not your ministry. Or maybe you need a lil’ motivation to return to a decorating project. You’re in the right place.
Mrs. Cr8’s Decorating Creative Process
1. Find one item for the space that will the source of inspiration.
It can be a color, a pillow, a picture, or rug. Take a picture of it. If it’s small enough take it with you when you go shopping. This is your decorating project mascot.
2. Write a list of all the things the space needs.
If you keep a paper planner, dedicate one page in your planner to the project. If you’re a digital girlie, make a checklist on your phone. Create a Pinterest board if you are up to it. Sometimes a place where you can visually see and bookmark everything helps you visualize the space. Make sure you are pinning real items not just the dreamy ones.
Real= Things you can afford + buy
Dreamy=If you had a million dollars and an HGTV decorator
3. Take pictures and videos of the space.
You always can see the whole space when you are out in the world shopping.
4.Take measurements and keep them in a note in your phone.
Sometimes I will just walk a space out with my feet, heels to toes. (Ex. If the couch is 12 of my feet long then I can easily walk that out in a store.)
5. Shop the house.
I am the Queen of reusing something I already have. Accessories are so easy to swap and move around. Take a good look around at the beautiful things you already have. That purple bowl tucked away in your cupboards might be the perfect + usable accent for your pantry snacks. That picture tucked in the basement might fit perfectly in that dead corner. Don’t be afraid to switch it up. Those black pillows that were getting stale on my couch are now sitting pretty on my bed. What’s the worse thing that can happen? You put it back. Girl, get to switching it up!
6.Look for one item at a time.
I try to only buy things that I LOVE. If it’s just okay. I keep looking. If it’s too expensive, I try to find a knock-off (like literally google DUPE of the item you are looking for) or I save my money. You know what your budget and family wear & tear will allow, work within your boundaries.
7. If you are unsure of an item, keep the receipt.
Sometimes you need to just see things in the space. If it doesn’t work, no biggie. Return it. Just make sure you don’t drag your feet when making returns. Get your money, money, honey, honey (in my Beyonce singing voice).
8. There are no rules, just love.
In my opinion, there are no rules when it comes to decorating. Let the things you love and the colors you love be your guide.
