Back-to-School season has a way of busting in . . . it’s loud, chaotic, and DEMANDING. You don’t need perfection, Mommy. You just need a reset that makes life feel doable with pockets of joy.
Pick one thing that makes your week run smoother. Maybe it’s getting the laundry rolling before the weekend, or a carry-out on Thursday when you are really dragging.
What can you anchor to lighten the load?
Joy can come from small tweaks. Move things around to make them feel new again, or treat yourself to a new coffee mug. That fall candle or pumpkin spice creamer, just might be the micro-joy you need to keep going.
Fall obsessed? Whip out your pumpkin stash! I’m almost certain you have a tubby or things from previous year to pull from. Permission granted (not that you need it).
Backpacks, shoes, sport bags, and school papers all need a designated HOME. Things need a dedicated home base so that everyone universally knows where things go. Mom has enough to do; we are not putting all the people’s things away too. They are more than capable of doing a lot things for themselves.
Morning You will thank Yesterday You. And don’t forget your own spot. Where is your landing pad? Where is your MOM CHAIR? Or maybe it’s a bin or bag you can tote around. You need a MOM Spot where you can reliably gather your things + your thoughts.
You don’t have to prep *everything*. One thing prepped is better than a plan that never happens.
What worked last year might not work this year, for you or the kids. Let go of what no longer fits. Adjust without guilt. Reassess to save your sanity. The kids are growing.
Take a few minutes to research the ages and stages of your child. Maybe that new behavior is actually a part of the developmental stage they are in.
Want more independence from your kids? Set them up for success. If the pants are too small, dirty, or still in the dryer—they can’t get ready fast. Teachers plan with the end in mind. Moms should too.
Do you best to plan for the week ahead. At the very least, plan for the day ahead. It’s unnecessarily hard to fly by the seat of your pants all the time not to mention, more expensive.
You deserve systems and supplies too. Mother yourself + organize your stuff like you do the children. Gather your non-negotiables:
This is not a drill. Your stuff + sanity matters.
Did something make you laugh today? Did you light a candle? Take 3 quiet minutes in the car before going inside? That’s not extra . . . that’s the point.
It’s the little joys that will keep you going.
You don’t have to be the most organized mom on the block. You don’t have to check every box. You just need to keep showing up—for them and for YOU. Here’s to a school year that’s not perfect, just JoyFULL.
